本書論述一個清史研究領域的問題，即秘密為什麼之於「秘密會社」重要？ 有學者認為秘密像血緣，捆綁住參與者。 本書在此基礎上加以補充：秘密與血緣有所分別，血緣不會因為擴散而沖淡，反之，秘密則隨著擴散，越不秘密。 因此，本書認為秘密會社不在於真正有多少秘密，而在於秘密的傳播本身才是秘密會社生存的標籤。
